Moles spend most of their lives underground. They tunnel through soil in search of earthworms and other invertebrates, pushing surplus soil to the surface as molehills. The mole itself is rarely seen, so the pattern of tunnels and fresh soil is usually the first sign.
What mole activity looks like
- Fresh, raised molehills in lawns, beds, fields or paddocks.
- Raised ridges where a feeding tunnel runs close to the surface.
- Loose soil appearing after rain or when the ground is being worked.
- Uneven ground that makes mowing, playing or walking more difficult.
Moles do not eat plants, but their tunnelling can disturb roots, damage the appearance of lawns and create trip hazards. The effect is often most noticeable where a neat surface or safe ground is important.
Why home remedies often disappoint
Smells, noise devices and home-made deterrents may appear to work temporarily, but mole activity can return when conditions remain suitable. Disturbing one tunnel does not necessarily deal with the wider network, and filling a molehill does not address the animal below the ground.
Professional mole management
A survey should establish whether the activity is fresh, which tunnels are in use and what outcome is required. A trained professional can then discuss an appropriate control method and the practical steps needed afterwards. Methods must be used carefully because moles detect disturbance in their tunnels and incorrect placement can make control less effective.
There is no reliable way to make every lawn permanently mole-free. The realistic aim is to reduce current activity, repair the surface and limit the chance of immediate re-entry where that can be done.
Keeping the ground manageable
Remove or level spoil once activity has stopped, repair damaged turf and mark uneven areas until they are safe. On larger sites, keep a record of where fresh molehills appear so a recurring pattern can be investigated rather than treated as isolated incidents.
