We'd always recommend against tackling a wasp nest yourself, nests are often somewhere awkward to reach, and disturbing one without the right equipment risks multiple stings, which can be serious if anyone nearby has an allergy. It's a bit more nuanced than it is for birds. Wild birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, but bees aren't given that same blanket protection, honeybees, for instance, aren't listed as a protected species under that Act. That said, there are legal restrictions on how pesticides can be used around bees, and because of how vital they are as pollinators, it's standard good practice across the pest control industry to relocate a honeybee colony rather than destroy it wherever that's possible. That's our approach too, we relocate honeybees rather than destroy them whenever we can.
The usual giveaways are droppings (small, dark and often found along skirting boards or in cupboards), gnaw marks on food packaging, skirting or wiring, greasy smear marks along walls where rodents repeatedly brush past, and scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night. Spotting one rodent during the day, when they're normally most active after dark, is also a sign the population has grown larger than you'd think. They can be, yes. Rodents are known to spread bacteria such as salmonella through food and surfaces they've been in contact with, and rats in particular are linked to leptospirosis, also known as Weil's disease, a rare but serious infection in the UK, spread through contact with infected urine. Beyond the health risks, they can also gnaw through wiring and structural timber, so a rodent problem is as much a property concern as a health one. Neither is a reason to panic, but both are good reasons to deal with an infestation properly rather than leave it.
Prevention comes down to a few basics: keeping food properly sealed and surfaces clean, fixing any gaps or holes around pipework, doors and airbricks that pests can squeeze through, keeping outside areas free of rubbish and overgrown vegetation, and dealing with any damp or leaking pipes that pests are drawn to. It won't guarantee you never see a pest again, but it makes your property a lot less inviting.
