Most spiders found in and around UK buildings are not a danger to people and play a useful role by feeding on other insects. A spider in a room is not automatically an infestation. The first step is to identify what is present and understand why webs or spiders are collecting in a particular area.

Why spiders appear indoors

Spiders may enter through gaps around doors, windows and roofline areas, or arrive because a building has a good supply of flying insects. Webs are often most noticeable around external lights, eaves, sheds, garages, window frames and quiet corners.

False widow concerns

False widow spiders are sometimes confused with more dangerous species. Identification from a quick photograph is not always reliable, and a suspected spider should not be handled. Keep children and pets away from the area and ask a professional for identification if there is a genuine concern.

If anyone has a bite or skin reaction, seek appropriate medical advice. A suspected spider bite is not proof that a spider caused the reaction.

Reducing spider activity

• Remove webs with a vacuum rather than handling spiders directly.
• Reduce insects around doors and windows by managing external lighting and keeping food waste covered.
• Repair gaps around doors, windows, vents and pipe entries where practical.
• Keep sheds, garages and storage areas tidy so activity can be spotted.
• Do not use insecticide simply because a harmless spider has been seen.

When professional help is useful

Contact a professional when spiders are appearing in large numbers, when webs are returning in a workplace or when the species cannot be identified. A survey can look at entry points, lighting, insect activity and harbourage so that the cause is addressed rather than repeatedly treating the visible web.
