Cockroaches
PreventaPest cockroach pest control for homes and businesses
Cockroaches prefer sheltered places with access to food, moisture and warmth. In buildings they can hide behind appliances, under sinks, inside cupboards, around pipework and in other cracks or service voids. They are often active at night, so a daytime sighting should be investigated rather than dismissed.
Signs of cockroaches
- Live or dead insects, especially around kitchens, boilers or service areas.
- Small droppings or dark smears in corners and along edges.
- Egg cases, shed skins or a persistent musty smell.
- Activity around food stores, bins, drains, sinks or warm appliances.
The two species most often discussed in UK pest control are German cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches, but identification should be confirmed because appearance, habitat and control can vary.
Make the building less suitable
Clean behind and beneath appliances, remove food debris, keep bins covered and repair leaks. Seal gaps around pipes, doors and damaged surfaces where practical. Check second-hand appliances before they are brought into a kitchen or workplace.
Why DIY treatment can fail
Cockroaches can remain hidden while a visible number is treated. Spraying the wrong product, missing egg cases or disturbing harbourages can allow the infestation to continue. Sticky monitors can help show where activity is present, but they do not solve an infestation by themselves.
Professional control begins with a survey of harbourages, food and water sources. A trained technician can then select a targeted treatment, monitor the result and advise on cleaning, repairs and proofing. In a workplace, treatment should be coordinated with food-safety and staff procedures.
Never use an insecticide unless the product is approved for the intended use and the label instructions are followed. Keep products away from children, pets and food.
