Silverfish
PreventaPest silverfish pest control for damp and humid areas
Silverfish are small, wingless insects with a tapered body and three tail bristles. They prefer dark, humid places and are often found in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, cupboards and other areas where moisture is present.
Are silverfish harmful?
Silverfish do not usually harm people, but they can damage paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste and other materials containing starches or adhesives. A regular sighting can also point to dampness that deserves attention, particularly where condensation, leaks or poor ventilation are present.
Signs to look for
- Fast-moving silver or grey insects in dark areas.
- Small feeding marks on paper, cardboard, wallpaper or stored documents.
- Activity around sinks, baths, pipework, cupboards and floor edges.
- Persistent condensation, damp surfaces or a musty smell.
Reduce the conditions they need
Repair leaks, improve ventilation and allow damp cupboards or storage areas to dry. Avoid storing paper and cardboard directly on damp floors or against cold walls. Vacuum edges and cracks regularly, remove clutter and seal gaps where practical.
Cleaning alone will not solve a problem if moisture remains. Conversely, using insecticide without correcting a leak or condensation issue may only provide temporary relief.
Professional treatment
A professional inspection can distinguish silverfish from similar insects, identify harbourages and check whether the activity is limited to one damp area or spread through the building. Treatment can then be matched to the site, while repairs and humidity control address the reason the insects are present.
For offices, archives and businesses holding paper records, move valuable documents away from damp storage and investigate the cause promptly.
