Feral pigeons are comfortable around towns, transport structures, commercial buildings and homes. Signs of a pigeon problem

• Nesting material, feathers and droppings around an access point.

• Noise and repeated bird movement around a roof void or service area.
• Secondary pests attracted by food, nesting material or accumulated waste.

Start with the attraction and access

Do not feed pigeons and keep food waste, bins and spillages under control. Check where birds are landing, what they are using for shelter and whether a roof or ledge provides an easy route into a nesting area. Cleaning alone will not prevent return if the same landing and nesting points remain open.

Professional proofing

Proofing may involve correctly fitted netting, wire, mesh, ledge systems or other deterrents. The right method depends on the building, the pressure from birds and the area that needs protecting. Poorly fitted proofing can leave gaps, trap birds or fail under weather and maintenance demands, so it should be designed and installed carefully.

Before disturbing birds, nests or eggs, obtain appropriate professional advice. Wild birds and their nests are subject to wildlife law, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Cleaning droppings also requires sensible precautions, especially where material has accumulated in a confined or poorly ventilated area.

Keeping the result effective

After proofing, keep food waste controlled, inspect fixings and remove new nesting material only when it is safe and lawful to do so. Commercial sites should keep records of inspections, repairs and any follow-up work.
