PAT testing Llandeilo
Llandeilo is small, but it punches well above its size. The colourful run of independents along Rhosmaen Street, the delis, galleries, boutiques and cafés, pulls in visitors from across the Tywi valley and beyond, helped along by Dinefwr and the countryside on the doorstep. Add the pubs and restaurants, the holiday cottages tucked around the valley and the working farms beyond the town, and there's a lot of electrical equipment quietly keeping the place running. Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the simple way to make sure it's all safe, and PreventaShock looks after it for businesses in and around Llandeilo.
For a smaller place, the last thing you want is testing day taking over, so we keep it quick and fit it around opening hours and the busier spells.
What it actually involves
Two stages, and most items are done in moments. First, a visual inspection of the plug, the lead and the casing, which is where the majority of faults show themselves, a cracked plug, a frayed cable, a scorch mark, a repair that's seen better days. Second, for the appliances that need it, an electrical test to check the things you can't spot by eye, such as earthing and insulation.
Each item that passes is labelled and recorded, so you finish with a clear list of what was tested and when, handy for your insurer, and for anyone who likes to see things properly documented.
The legal bit, without the scaremongering
You'll hear that PAT testing is a yearly legal requirement. It isn't, and it's worth knowing where you actually stand. No law names PAT testing or sets how often it must be done. The duty comes from the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which require electrical equipment that could cause harm to be kept in a safe condition. PAT testing is simply the recognised way of showing you're meeting that.
The Health and Safety Executive backs a risk-based approach rather than blanket annual testing, and its guidance on maintaining portable electrical equipment sets out suggested intervals depending on the equipment and where it's used.
How often you'll need it
It depends on the kit and how hard it works. A coffee machine going all day in a busy café, or tools out on a farm, want checking more regularly than a lamp or a card reader in a quiet gallery. Holiday cottages, with appliances handled by a run of different guests, sit in between. If you run a small place with only a handful of items, we'll tell you so and keep it proportionate, rather than dressing up a quick job as something bigger.
Who we test for around Llandeilo
We cover the full mix of the town and the valley, independent shops, delis and galleries, cafés, pubs and restaurants, offices, visitor attractions and tea rooms, holiday cottages and guesthouses, care homes, and the farms and rural businesses spread through the surrounding countryside. Whether it's a single small shop or a few sites across the area, the approach is the same: thorough, neatly recorded, and over with as little fuss as possible.
